It’s hard to remember a time when RAT pedals weren’t a staple in guitar rigs all over the world. However, back in 1978 the “Bud Box’ was born in the basement of the ProCo Sound Factory in Kalamazoo Michigan. There were only 12 made, including the prototype. The Bud Box was never intended to be mass produced- but the world had other plans. By 1979 the first Rat, with its distinctive wrap around enclosure, was born for mass production.

Over more than 40 years since, the Rat has seen multiple iterations and taken on challenges to meet the needs of modern players again and again. The RAT sound was adopted by players from all walks and styles, the RAT evolved from a single, hand-built prototype into a family of the most versatile and most recorded distortion pedals in the world. The success stories are many, and the RAT 2, Turbo RAT, Deucetone RAT, You Dirty RAT remain in production and used by players everywhere to this day. Most recently joined by the Lil’ RAT, which brings the RAT sound to a smaller footprint, the RAT sound continues on.
